What You Need to Hire a Car in Malta
Renting a car in Malta is straightforward, but a few requirements catch first-time visitors out. Here’s exactly what you’ll need before you book.
Minimum age
Most renters need to be at least 21–23 years old depending on the car category, with a minimum of 1–2 years’ driving experience. Younger driver surcharges may apply on some vehicle groups — ask us when booking if you’re under 25.
Driving licence
- A full, valid driving licence held for at least 1 year
- EU licences are accepted as-is
- Non-EU licence holders should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national licence, or check with us in advance
Documents to bring at pickup
- Valid driving licence (and IDP if applicable)
- Passport or national ID
- Booking confirmation
- The credit/debit card used to book, for the security deposit
Deposit & payment
